About this model

About the Bimota KB 1

The Bimota KB1 is the first Kawasaki-powered Bimota and one of the marque's major early successes. Bimota built it from 1978 to 1982 as a complete motorcycle and, mainly, as a kit around Kawasaki Z900, Z1000 and Z1-R engines. KB1 is therefore a family name with several Kawasaki base engines; the 1,015 cc Z1000 is the most useful technical reference, but every machine must be checked individually.

Its appeal is the light Bimota chassis and sharp geometry alongside the robust air-cooled Kawasaki inline-four. A sound KB1 is a classic sport motorcycle for an enthusiast, not a standard Z1000 with cosmetic parts. Look for original frame and kit components, correct engine identity and quality of previous restoration work.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Check whether frame, swingarm, tank and bodywork are original KB1/kit parts; many machines were assembled or modified.
  • Identify the Kawasaki engine as Z900, Z1000 or Z1-R and do not blindly trust advert displacement or output.
  • Check carburettors, cam chain, oil/fuel leaks and charging system on the air-cooled inline-four.
  • Inspect frame tubes, welds, wheels and brake mounting for corrosion, damage or non-original work.
  • Ask for restoration and specialist-parts documentation; the 811 kit examples can differ substantially.
