Generations and editions
Features and handling differ by generation. Use this overview to find the right version.
Years
2007 - 2011
2007–2011 DB5S/RE 1100
GenerationThe 1100 version uses the larger Ducati DS twin. Identify it with correct 1100/S/RE paperwork; its extra capacity chiefly brings stronger mid-range torque.
Years
2006 - 2011
2006–2011 DB5R 1000
GenerationThe DB5R succeeded the Mille as the 1000 cc version. Verify actual engine and equipment specification, as naming was not used consistently in every market.
Years
2005 - 2006
2005–2006 DB5 Mille
GenerationThe original 992 cc DB5 with Ducati 1000 DS and Öhlins equipment. This is the light, earliest reference of the line.
About the Bimota DB 5
The Bimota DB5 marked Bimota's 2005 return with a modern, lightweight Ducati-powered sport motorcycle. The first DB5 Mille used the 992 cc air/oil-cooled Ducati 1000 DS, followed by DB5R and 1100 versions. Its character is therefore not that of a high-revving four-cylinder superbike, but a light, torquey L-twin in a chromium-molybdenum trellis frame with aluminium side plates, high-grade suspension and Brembo brakes.
The DB5 suits an experienced rider or collector seeking an analogue Ducati twin with exclusive Bimota cycle parts. Match exact displacement and version to the frame plate and documents: Mille, R and 1100/S/RE are not interchangeable. Buy chiefly on maintenance, completeness and the condition of the special frame, bodywork and suspension parts.

What to check before buying
- Check Ducati DS timing belts, valve clearances, oil leaks and cold starting with invoices.
- Establish exactly whether it is a 1000 Mille/R or 1100 version; years and names overlap.
- Inspect the trellis frame, aluminium side plates, swingarm and bodywork for damage or non-original repairs.
- Check overhaul history of Öhlins/Marzocchi/Extrem-Tech suspension according to the actual version.
- Ask about availability of DB5-specific bodywork, electrical parts and exhaust components before purchase.
