2003–2004 Dusk
GenerationThe Dusk is the only documented Velvet 400: a liquid-cooled 383 cc scooter with about 28 hp, 30 Nm and twin disc brakes. It is not a re-bodied 250, so always confirm the 400/Dusk type designation when ordering parts.
About the Benelli Velvet 400
The Benelli Velvet 400 Dusk is the short-lived, high-output version of the original Velvet scooter range. Its 383 cc single-cylinder four-stroke is liquid-cooled and drives the rear wheel through a CVT automatic transmission. The Dusk reached the market in 2003 and was not brought back when Benelli later restarted the Velvet range; in practice, a ‘Velvet 400’ therefore refers to this specific version rather than a long-running model name.
With around 21 kW, twin disc brakes, a 13-inch front wheel and a 12-inch rear wheel, the Dusk is aimed at fast, comfortable commuting and touring. It suits a rider wanting more open-road reserve than a Velvet 250, but any used example merits a thorough mechanical inspection. Focus on CVT and cooling-system service history, then assess brakes, tyres and fairing panels. Its short production run makes correct identification by type and year especially important when sourcing parts.

What to check before buying
- Check invoices for CVT belt, roller and clutch work; irregular engagement or slipping under load needs investigation.
- Check coolant level, radiator, hoses and any leakage around the pump and connections; the 400 is liquid-cooled.
- Test cold and hot starting and measure charging voltage; also inspect connectors and switches for corrosion after storage.
- Inspect both disc brakes, calipers and hoses for binding, uneven wear and old brake fluid.
- Check the fork, rear shocks, steering-head bearings and tyre age; a comfortable test ride should reveal no play, knocking or instability.
