About the Benelli 654
The Benelli 654 is the large four-cylinder that succeeded the 504 Sport in 1980. Its 604 cc air-cooled inline-four derives from the 900 Sei and combines four cylinders with five speeds, chain drive and distinctive 1980s touring character. The 654 is not a modern 650 twin: it is a heavy Italian classic whose maintenance condition matters more than odometer reading.
The family includes the 654 T and later 654 Sport. The T is the original touring version; the Sport adopted different seat/handlebar treatment and graphics. Check type plate, frame and engine numbers, and original body parts before ordering components. The rows deliberately cover only these evidenced versions; adverts do not always use 654, 654 T and 654 Sport consistently.

What to check before buying
- Check all four carburettors for contamination, leaks and synchronisation, and listen for uneven running from cold.
- Test charging voltage, ignition, switches and all lights; ageing wiring, connectors and earth connections deserve attention.
- Test clutch, five-speed gearbox, chain and sprockets over a full road test, including a hot restart.
- Inspect brake discs, calipers, hoses and fluid carefully; storage quickly degrades an old hydraulic brake system.
- Establish T versus Sport from type plate, paperwork, fairing, bars, seat and graphics; parts are not always interchangeable.
