500 Quattro
GenerationThe original Benelli 500 Quattro. Early years use a front drum brake, while later machines received a single disc. Do not confuse it with the 500 LS from 1977 or the later 504 Sport.
About the Benelli 500 Quattro
The Benelli 500 Quattro is Pesaro's original 500 cc inline-four, sold from 1974 until the 500 LS arrived in 1977. The air-cooled 498 cc four with four Dell'Orto carburettors and five-speed gearbox shares its basic architecture with the 750 Sei, yet has a distinct early-1970s character. It is a heavy, charismatic classic with four exhausts and a notably revvy nature.
Keep the 500 Quattro distinct from the later 500 LS and 504 Sport: they are separate Benelli models with different trim and brakes. On a Quattro, the build year and front brake matter for parts identification; early bikes used a front drum, later examples a single disc. A well-adjusted, complete example is appealing, but purchase condition should focus on engine, carburation, electrics and original components.

What to check before buying
- Check all four Dell'Orto carburettors for wear, contamination, leaks and correct synchronisation; poor adjustment is immediately apparent.
- Inspect tank, fuel taps and lines for rust debris and leaks before starting a long-stored motorcycle.
- Test charging voltage, ignition switch, controls and lights; ageing wiring and earth connections need attention.
- Test every one of the five gears and finding neutral on a road test, along with clutch and chain condition.
- Establish year and version from frame and engine numbers and inspect the front brake; early drum and later disc parts are not interchangeable.
