About the Benelli 254
The Benelli 254 is the 231cc four-cylinder from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Technically it shares its small air-cooled SOHC inline-four with the Benelli 250 Quattro, but the 254 received its own more conventional sport/touring specification and remained in production longer. Names and photographs are often mixed in adverts; bodywork, instruments and frame number make the difference.
The 254 appeals as a rare mini four with plenty of character, but needs more attention than an ordinary single-cylinder 250. Four carburettors, valves, ignition and cooling airflow must work together correctly. Choose on clean cold starting, documented synchronisation and original complete bodywork.

What to check before buying
- Identify 254 versus 250 Quattro by frame plate and bodywork; the shared 231cc engine alone does not establish model identity.
- Check four carburettors for synchronisation, leaks and storage contamination.
- Check valve clearances, cam chain, oil level and starting behaviour of the compact SOHC inline-four.
- Test contact-breaker ignition, charging, switches and instruments for reliable operation.
- Inspect exhaust, wheels and plastic parts for corrosion, cracks and incorrect replacements.
