1988–1990 TXR 312 M
GenerationThe TXR 312 M is the distinct trials version with a 277 cc two-stroke, six gears, 21/18-inch wheels and disc brakes at both ends. Do not confuse it with the TX 311 or the separately named TX 312 M; always match the TXR model code to frame and engine.
About the Aprilia TXR 312 M
The Aprilia TXR 312 M is a genuine late-1980s trials motorcycle, built around a 277 cc single-cylinder two-stroke with rotary-valve induction and a six-speed manual gearbox. Independent model and parts sources place it from 1988; the TXR 312 M is therefore neither a typo for the TX 311 nor a modern enduro. Its lightweight chrome-moly steel double-downtube chassis, 21/18-inch wheel pair and high ground clearance were chosen for slow, technical off-road riding.
The TXR has disc brakes at both ends, kick starting and a Dell’Orto carburettor. It is a specialist classic trials bike: balance, traction and low-speed control matter more than long road journeys. Check the exact model code and year from frame and engine numbers, because TX 312 M and TXR 312 M both occur in catalogues but are not the same model name. For a usable classic, original model-specific parts and a sound chassis count for more than paint alone.

What to check before buying
- Check compression, cold starting and exhaust smoke from the 277 cc two-stroke, and ask about oil-supply and carburettor maintenance.
- Inspect the rotary-valve induction system and Dell’Orto carburettor for air leaks, damaged cables and stable throttle response.
- Check the six-speed gearbox, wet clutch, chain and automatic chain tensioner under load for jumping or inconsistent operation.
- Inspect the frame, fork, monoshock, swingarm and bearings for play, cracks and signs of intensive trials use.
- Inspect both disc brakes, master cylinders and lines for seizure, leaks and clear pressure build-up.
