Years
1998 - 2008
The liquid-cooled Sonic 50 with radiator, coolant circuit and automatic variator. This version needs LC/H2O-specific parts; do not confuse it with the parallel air-cooled Sonic.
Years
1998 - 2007
The air-cooled Sonic 50 base version with a two-stroke engine and automatic variator. Identify it by the absence of a radiator and coolant hoses; buy AC-specific ignition and cooling parts.
Years
1998 - 2005
The Sonic GP 50 2T is the liquid-cooled GP version. Check for the radiator and GP designation, and order parts by version; GP is not a generic Sonic AC.
Years
1998 - 2001
The Sonic FT 50 2T is the air-cooled FT version. Use ‘FT’ together with VIN and year to identify parts; it is not automatically the same as a Sonic GP or LC.
The Aprilia Sonic is a sporty-styled 50cc scooter from the 1998–2008 period. The name covers parallel air-cooled and liquid-cooled two-stroke variants with an automatic variator, so a used bike should not be identified from ‘Sonic 50’ alone. The liquid-cooled LC/H2O version has a radiator and coolant circuit, whereas the air-cooled version does not. FT and GP are distinct versions within the same Sonic family.
For everyday moped use the Sonic is compact and straightforward, but many examples have been modified over the years. Check the cylinder capacity, exhaust, variator and restriction for legality and insurability. Buy service parts by VIN and engine/cooling type: AC, LC/H2O, FT and GP are not safe to interchange on model name or year alone. A tidy original scooter with documented maintenance is usually a better buy than a modified Sonic without paperwork.
