About this model

About the Aprilia Area 51

The Aprilia Area 51 is a strikingly styled 50 cc scooter from 1998–2002. Beneath its angular bodywork sits a liquid-cooled horizontal Minarelli two-stroke of about 49 cc with automatic variator transmission. The Area 51 is therefore not an Amico: it has a different liquid-cooled powertrain, 13-inch wheels and its own chassis and bodywork programme. CAT and SBK labels appear in the market; do not treat them as a different displacement without the type plate.

This is a late-1990s enthusiast scooter, with futuristic styling but conventional two-stroke CVT engineering. When buying, inspect the cooling system, variator and belt condition, and especially the originality of the panels, lighting and 13-inch wheels. Many examples have been modified, so compare output and registration with the paperwork rather than tuning parts or advertisements. The generation below applies only to the original 1998–2002 Area 51 with liquid-cooled 49 cc engine.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Inspect the radiator, hoses, water pump, coolant and ventilation for leaks or corrosion; the Area 51 uses a liquid-cooled Minarelli two-stroke.
  • Inspect the belt, rollers, clutch and variator for wear or tuning parts, and check that registered output still matches homologation.
  • Check the angular body panels, headlight, indicators, 13-inch wheels and mounts for cracks, poor repairs and missing original parts.
  • Test brakes, steering-head bearings, wheel bearings, charging voltage and all lighting; age, storage and modifications matter more here than odometer reading alone.
