About the Moto Guzzi GTS
The Moto Guzzi GTS is an Italian single-cylinder motorcycle with a horizontal 498 cc engine, produced from 1934 to 1940. The GTS designation stood for 'Gran Turismo Sport', and the model differentiated itself from contemporaries through a larger fuel tank, improved handling, and a sportier setup for longer-distance riding. A separate 350/400 cc GTS variant also appeared in the 1970s, aimed at the Japanese market.
The pre-war GTS appeals to collectors of early Italian classics and historically minded riders. Riding a 90-year-old example requires mechanical knowledge and a willingness to do maintenance. As a museum piece or rally participant it competes with contemporaries such as the BMW R17 and the Velocette MSS of the same generation.

What to check before buying
- Check piston and cylinder bore for wear from aged or incorrect lubricants; original bore dimensions are virtually unobtainable.
- Inspect the magneto ignition unit for deterioration; weak spark is the most common cause of starting problems.
- Check the wheel rims and spokes for corrosion; restoring to roadworthy condition requires specialist work.
- Verify all rubber seals for age-related brittleness; oil leaks are the norm on 80+ year old engines.
- Check for completeness; original Guzzi GTS parts are extremely scarce and expensive.
