Generation

The 1000 Convert combines the 948cc big-block V-twin and shaft drive with its unusual hydraulic torque converter and two drive ranges. That drivetrain is the decisive identifier and calls for a much more focused maintenance record than a manual Guzzi.

About this model

About the Moto Guzzi 1000 Convert

The Moto Guzzi 1000 Convert is an unusual large touring Guzzi from the late 1970s and early 1980s. It combines the 948cc longitudinal air-cooled V-twin and shaft drive with the Convert transmission: a hydraulic torque converter and two-speed transmission rather than the usual manual five- or six-speed gearbox. It is therefore not simply a normal 1000cc Guzzi with an automatic; it is a technical niche that rewards knowledge of the correct oil, adjustment and parts.

For the right buyer, the Convert is a relaxed classic long-distance machine with character, low revs and a remarkably smooth driveline. It is heavy and not a beginner motorcycle, while diagnosis of the transmission is more specialist work than on a conventional Guzzi. Choose one with invoices, a documented oil history and a long test ride from cold. Jerky take-off, slip, leaks or poorly functioning shift/kickdown operation are not cosmetic details: they determine both value and future maintenance.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • From cold, check the Convert drive for smooth take-off, no slip and correct operation of both drive ranges; specifically ask for oil and filter history.
  • Inspect the transmission, hoses and cooler for leaks; even a small oil trace around a hydraulic drive deserves investigation.
  • Check final-drive oil, universal joint and splines for play or knocks on and off the throttle.
  • Measure charging voltage and test the starter and hot starting; old regulators, earth connections and starting circuits often cause faults.
  • Inspect brake hoses, master cylinders, fork seals and frame for age, corrosion and brakes that do not release fully.
