2005–2007 R 1200 ST
GenerationThe R 1200 ST combines the 1,170cc oil-cooled boxer from BMW’s R 1200 range with a fixed touring fairing, Telelever front end and shaft drive. It is lighter and sportier than the R 1200 RT while still providing worthwhile protection for long motorway rides. When buying, inspect the final drive, ABS/brake-servo servicing where fitted, and wear around the fairing mounts.
About the Bmw R 1200 ST
The BMW R1200ST is a sporty touring motorcycle produced by BMW Motorrad from 2005 to 2007, powered by an air-cooled boxer-twin of 1170 cc producing 110 hp. The ST stands for Sport Tourer and fills the gap between the faster R1200S and the fully faired R1200RT. The bike is equipped with a half-fairing and modest wind protection, offering a more sporting riding position than the RT. The R1200ST was produced for only three years before being discontinued, making it a relatively rare model. It is one of the last models with the classic air-cooled boxer before the newer oil-cooled versions.
The R1200ST targets riders who want a dynamic daily machine with sufficient touring capacity for the weekend, without the heavy full fairing of an RT. The ergonomics combine a sporting edge with acceptable comfort for multi-day rides. Direct competitor was the Honda VFR800. Its rarity makes good examples relatively value-stable, and it is a preferred choice for riders who appreciate the classic boxer-motor DNA over the more modern water-cooled versions.

What to check before buying
- Check the driveshaft and Paralever suspension for play: a typical BMW issue at higher mileages that is accelerated by sporting use.
- Inspect the hydraulic clutch for leaks and correct lever travel: the R1200ST's hydraulic clutch is sensitive to damage from careless handling.
- Check the half-fairing mounting: the R1200ST uses a straightforward bracket design that is prone to vibration-induced wear.
- Verify gearbox shifting quality: synchromesh on the older airhead-era gearbox can become notchy at higher mileages.
- Watch for corrosion on the exhaust pipes and lambda sensor: the two headers run close to the hot engine and are prone to oxidation and rust.
